Hello, in order to get the network manager to allow our twine access to the internet he needs to know what ports etc it uses (found that in another help topic) and also what urls it's communicating with. I'm finding it hard to get this information, and couldn't see any info on the web.

When setting up the device, it's talking directly to my machine, so that's fine.

1) When I'm programming it (adding twines to the device) it seems to be blocked ( starts fine then disappears) so I'm guessing it needs access to twine.cc, right? Or is the client code communicating directly to the twine over the network rather than the internet?
(EDIT: See from someone else's post that it goes via the internet for this bit so I'll need to give it access to twine.cc for sure)

2) Further more once the twine is programmed up is it then independent of twine.cc posting directly to twitter.com or does it send things to twine.cc where the request is processed (eg the tweet is changed slightly to avoid repetition.. I'm guessing that doesn't happen on the device or does it?)

Any help you can provide about what domains it accesses would be great!

We have two networks - a secure one that we use as employees and a guest one, where the Twine needs to live. In the final step of the setup process, is it critical that the user sets their wifi back to be on the same network as the Twine or do they just need to be on a network that has them connected to the internet? Does the Twine communicate with me via your site or directly to me over a local network?
The URL I need to have passed seems to be too long for the Twine configuration box so I have to use Tinyurl.com to make it fit.
The company I work for, xMatters, offer enterprise notification system. We deliver carrier-grade email, SMS, voice, fax, etc.

We have a cool program for employees that we call "555". It was inspired by Google's 20% Time to allow us to pick fun projects we would like to explore. The fives represent:

* It happens every 5th of the month or thereabouts - you get the whole day to explore whatever you want.
* It amounts to approximately 5% of an engineer's working life.
* On the morning following, each engineer has 5 minutes to demo what they created on their day.

I have been watching the Twine for awhile and thought it would be the perfect marriage: easy to setup sensor's, and carrier-grade alerts.

Instead of re-documenting everything here, you can see my work by going to: http://community.xmatters.com/community/it-management/discuss/blog/2013/01/12/want-to-monitor-temperature-moisture-doors-and-more

And one other note: my original intent was to use an existing service like IFTTT, COSM, Tarpipe or one of the other ETL providers out there to get this done, but it became apparent that our (and everybody else's) reliance on REST leaves a gap. We all speak REST and JSON, but none of our JSON lines up. Nobody it seems provides a simple ability to define a template JSON message with variable replacement as an integration block (anyone want to do a startup with me?). So I wrote some simple, likely flawed, PHP code as glue between Twine's GET and our POST. Follow the blog post above to our community for the source if you would like it to integrate your Twine to other REST services

I had a lot of fun playing with Twine - thank you guys for the platform!

Doug

currently I use an old laptop with a USB temperature probe and some bits of freeware to monitor my company's small server room. With the twine I hope to monitor temperature, moisture and detect when the server room door is opened.
Some functionality is missing though unless someone can advise me otherwise.
I need a daily (at least) heartbeat message so that I know the thing is working. Is there any way to create a time based rule? Not yet afaics
I would like to be able to insert data into my update emails, so, for example, if the temperature goes above 28C I want to know just how hot it is. I don't want to set a rule for every possible temperature, just have the email that's generated include the actual temperature at the time. the most flexible way would be to allow the use of !sensor value! as a macro in the email text where sensor value can be one of temperature, humidity, orientation etc.
Next I want to be able to use "not" in a rule e.g. the twine is "not" on its back - that's simpler than a rule to cover all the other possible orientations.
I would like to be able to set a "cleared" checkbox in a rule which sends another message when the situation is resolved. in other words if the rule is to send an email when the temperature goes above 28c, then a clear message would be sent when it went back below.
And the very last thing I want for Christmas is a current sensor to wrap around the main power line, so that if the power goes, then while the UPS is still keeping things alive I get a death squawk.

Cool device though - so much potential
