Just a funny little suggestion that takes advantage of the orientation sensor. My wife and I take turns doing dishes but always seem to forget who did them last. It's an expensive solution, but I could easily see the Twine being sandwiched between two plates, one with my name on top... one with my wife's name on bottom. When I do the dishes, I flip the Twine so her name is visible and a text message is sent to her "Your Turn!" -- when she does the dishes, she flips the Twine so my name is visible and I get the text message. Again, a pricey solution but definitely a good example of how the Twine orientation sensor could be used for tracking purposes.

The company I work for, xMatters, offer enterprise notification system. We deliver carrier-grade email, SMS, voice, fax, etc.

We have a cool program for employees that we call "555". It was inspired by Google's 20% Time to allow us to pick fun projects we would like to explore. The fives represent:

* It happens every 5th of the month or thereabouts - you get the whole day to explore whatever you want.
* It amounts to approximately 5% of an engineer's working life.
* On the morning following, each engineer has 5 minutes to demo what they created on their day.

I have been watching the Twine for awhile and thought it would be the perfect marriage: easy to setup sensor's, and carrier-grade alerts.

Instead of re-documenting everything here, you can see my work by going to: http://community.xmatters.com/community/it-management/discuss/blog/2013/01/12/want-to-monitor-temperature-moisture-doors-and-more

And one other note: my original intent was to use an existing service like IFTTT, COSM, Tarpipe or one of the other ETL providers out there to get this done, but it became apparent that our (and everybody else's) reliance on REST leaves a gap. We all speak REST and JSON, but none of our JSON lines up. Nobody it seems provides a simple ability to define a template JSON message with variable replacement as an integration block (anyone want to do a startup with me?). So I wrote some simple, likely flawed, PHP code as glue between Twine's GET and our POST. Follow the blog post above to our community for the source if you would like it to integrate your Twine to other REST services

I had a lot of fun playing with Twine - thank you guys for the platform!

Doug
When I set it to fast mode, after a period of time the slider goes back to "slow".

The firmware update description says, "To put your Twine in fast mode, click on the “fast/slow” switch at the bottom of the Twine’s dashboard. You’ll be prompted to flip your Twine bottom side up, and then you’ll be in fast mode (once Twine is in fast mode, you can flip it back over)." Is there any disadvantage to leaving it bottom side up?

In my previous article (http://www.savagehomeautomation.com/projects/twine-garage-door-monitor.html) I demonstrated how to use the Twine to monitor the state of a garage door and send alert notifications via text (SMS) or email if the door had been left open for a certain period of time. In that article/project we used the built-in orientation sensor in the Twine and the Twine mounted directly to the garage door to determine garage door state. While this was a simple and elegant solution there a certain practical issues for a long term garage monitoring solution that this project did not really address.

I have published a new article/project using Twine along with external overhead door sensors to monitor the state of multiple garage doors and it has the additional benefit of being able to be locally powered and not rely solely on batteries.

NEW PROJECT/ARTICLE:
http://www.savagehomeautomation.com/projects/twine-garage-door-monitor-revisit.html

Happy Twining!
