I'm going to return my twine this week. The network connection issues are driving me absolutely crazy. Sometimes the twine connects. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes for a few minutes. Sometimes for a few hours. When it is connected it sometimes sends email notifications. Sometimes to both emails that I have set up. Sometimes to just one. Sometimes the other. Most of the times neither.

10 days ago Chrstine from tech support promised me the the November modem firmware update which is supposed to take care of these connection problems. I wouldn't know since I'm still waiting. And just like the Twine itself customer service has stopped responding to my emails. And while Ive got a lot of patience and good will with new products from small companies I have absolutely zero tolerance for lack of transparency and updates to keep the customer in the loop.

Ayways, I'm very happy that I ordered from Amazon so that my best experience with the Twine will be the hassle free return. Should've listened to all the 1-star review on Amazon. I sure will be adding mine.

Ciao (for now) and good luck you guys!

Announcing the Twine Cloud Shield:
Stack Cloud Shield on your Arduino, connect it to Twine, and get email, texting, calling, and more in a jiffy. With Cloud Shield, you can add the ability to trigger any Twine output from your Arduino sketch with three lines of code, so you can focus on your idea and not debugging networking code. Want to see how easy it is? Check out this video.
What could make this even better? If you get a Twine + Cloud Shield kit now, you’ll get $10 off! Already have a Twine, but want the Cloud Shield? Free shipping for you (domestic only)!
In the video, you get a special sneak preview of a soon-to-be released notification method, phone calls! Your Twine will call you with the text you type in the action. It will be available as a paid add-on.

Battery life update:

First of all, don't worry! We're not done reducing power consumption and are continuing to invest development resources into improving Twine battery life. The Twine 1.2 release not only added new features like vibration support, but also reduced the power used by the accelerometer and external port. Here's the situation at the moment:
1. In fixed installations, you can use virtually any micro-USB power supply to run your Twine. Here's one on Amazon with free shipping. Twine will automatically fall back to batteries if external power is lost.
2. This pie chart below shows how much power each Twine component uses.
As you can see, the WiFi radio accounts for about 76% of Twine's power consumption. That's a big, but unfortunately very necessary chunk! To further improve battery life, we have started a major rework of the way that the radio subsystem works. This effort will take some time to complete, but should make very significant reductions in the amount of power that the radio uses. We'll keep you updated as we get closer to release.
Some googling on this basically turned up nothing. Some folks I spoke to swear these exist in China, but I've been unable to locate any so far.

So: the plan is to

a) Cannibalize an existing smoke detector
b) Measure the voltage inbound to its piezo alarm when it goes off
c) Hit radio shack for whatever I need to interface that with the Twine breakout
d) Add another 2 x AAA's in parallel

... and a rule that Tweets me: THE ROOF, THE ROOF, THE ROOF IS ON FIRE if the smoke alarm ever goes off.

standard disclaimer: yeah I know, not using this for safety/critical uses, etc. Just an easy first experiment for my twine.

Hi, I have just taken delivery of my first Twines (and love the simplicity of setup!)

One of the things I am attempting is event recording. As an example, if I attach a Twine to a door I can use the vibration sensor to detect each time the door is opened. I want to record and subsequently visualise that data showing current and historical activity (ie: how many times was the door opened last week). I could create a web page and database that will handle all of this but it occurred to me that Google Analytics has all of this already covered. By simply issuing a GET request to a web page that I have control of I would then like to see that event appear in my Google Analytics. I tried it out but I am guessing that Google doesn't record or display the event as it regards the request from the Twine device to be a spider/bot.

Does anybody have any suggestions on whether it is possible to change this?

I took it to work today (now that the vibration sensor is functional), which is where I planned to use it most of the time.

I went to set it up for a new network (to be able to use it at my job-site); which after some hair pulling seemed to succeed. I got a message about needing a new firmware (which I had updated 2-3 days ago); and then it went dead.

I've pulled the batteries (which were perfectly good) several times, brought the Twine back home and put new batteries in it... nothing. It's just a green doorstop right now.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I get all the way through the setup, it connects to home wifi fine, setup tells me to turn it over then reconnect computer to home wifi, which I do, and lo-and-behold the twine dashboard cannot identify any connected twine.

the twine then seems to have entered an inactive phase where it won't try to connect to the network, won't reenter setup mode, etc. I just have to remove batteries and start again.....which is pointless, I have gone through this process many times now....very flaky device.....and not enough online support info. annoying.....

John - Is the circuitry voltage protected? I'm assuming yes, since I believe the standard usb voltage is larger then 3 volts.

If so, how about a cable or clip on device that would connect a standard 9volt battery direct to the mini USB slot?. Cable would work, but a holder that a 9volt battery is inserted into, with a mini male plug would work also.

Regards - Don

I am using twine in my wine cellar to measure temperature..however, compared to my existing equipment which measures both ambient and in bottle temps, the ambient temp on twine seems a few degrees low which may make sense because it is inside the case. What benchmarks / lab tests have you done confirm temp. accuracy? In most applications 1 or 2 degrees is acceptable but not in a wine cellar...would love to connect an in bottle temp probe to my twine to improve accuracy within .5 degree. My current cooling unit keeps the cellar within .75 degrees at all times and want to use twine as a backup in case that sensor fails....
